Pianola – December 2013

Pianola Piano re-build 2013.

After re-building  the piano action, keyboard and applying a new finish, the owner wished to re-build pianola mechanism too.

I took this project for hobby and educational purposes combining skills in piano technology, electronics and pneumatic technology experience, gained in several pipe-organ and automated piano re-buildings.

Pianola was missing most of the lower action, including all control tubing.  After dismantling everything and patiently study its function, the pianola was re-build and re-tubed.

Finally, I designed and  modeled a system to control it by software instead of the original perforated rolls. Inside the pianola case, I managed to fit a sub-woofer and on top of it, a nice soundbar.

Result is an authentic acoustic automated upright piano accompanied by backing tracks.

Enjoy!
